Healthy Ways To De-Stress

Finding yourself reaching for a glass of wine at the end of the day? There are some healthy alternatives to de-stress!

Life can be busy these days. Whether you’re acting as a taxi driver for your kids, working full time or simply finding that you don’t have a minute to yourself, it can be easy to reach for that quick fix to help yourself unwind. Pouring that glass of wine at the end of a busy day can feel like the treat you deserve, but there are alternative more healthy ways to destress, and you might find that you enjoy them more too!

The trouble with alcohol is that it can become a habit and a coping mechanism that can become an addiction. Alcohol can even cause anxiety and play havoc with your sleep. So sometimes, our go-to strategies we employ to relax can end up making us feel worse. According to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, excessive drinking can increase your risk of heart disease, cancer, digestive issues, depression and anxiety. Of course, everything in moderation is fine, but if you are seeking some alternatives then read on!

Alcohol can activate the reward centres in the brain, so try replacing it with activities that do the same. Connecting with friends can release oxytocin which calms the stress response, so is a great way to unwind at the end of the day. Even a 10-minute chat can boost our mood. Likewise, physical exercise releases endorphins which also puts us in a better mood and less likely to reach for the alcohol. Again, this could just be a quick walk with the dog or a workout for the whole family. Why not get the children involved!

Meditation is a great way to calm yourself and focus on your health and wellbeing. If you are able to find 10 minutes at the end of the day for yourself, you can really reap the rewards. It’s easy these days to find a you-tube video or phone ap that can guide you and the more you practise the easier it will become! Meditation can increase your self-awareness and self-fulfilment enabling you to be more in control of your choices. Again, this is something that the whole family can enjoy!

And remember, if you do fancy flopping down in front of the TV at the end of a busy day there are some great mocktails out there! Why not get started at https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/collection/non-alcoholic-cocktail-recipes
